December's Animal Attraction | Japanese Macaque
Griffin is a 12-year-old female Japanese macaque – a.k.a., snow monkey – who was born at the Detroit Zoo. She can frequently be spotted relaxing and grooming with her mother, Crissy, and sisters, Carmen and Laura. Despite her “chill” attitude, she can be quite feisty come feeding time, according to the animal care staff most familiar with her. Griffin is a member of an all-female troop that also includes top banana Ms. Baldy (so named for the bald spot on her forehead), her daughter, Marilynn, and granddaughter, Julianne, as well as Janet, her daughter, Lynda, and the only macaque without kin inside the habitat, Madeline. The snow monkeys are temporarily off exhibit while improvements are being made to their habitat. Come visit them this winter ... the perfect time to see them basking in the warm steam from their hot tub and entertaining Zoo guests with their playful antics.
