Detroit Zoo - African Grasslands

African Grasslands

The African Grasslands in the Zoo’s northwest corner provides an environment for learning about the diverse, adaptable species of the vast African Savannah. Warthogs help tell the story of this important biome, and are joined by the reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, white rhinoceroses, lions and aardvarks.

An exciting interactive feature of the African Grasslands is the Giraffe Encounter. From late spring through early fall, Zoo guests can hand-feed special treats to the reticulated giraffes several times a week. The raised wooden deck elevates visitors to eye level with the giraffes, allowing close encounters with these gentle animals.
