Chilean flamingo

Phoenicopterus chilensis

At the Detroit Zoo
The Chilean flamingos can be found in the American Grasslands.

The Chilean flamingo is a large-bodied bird with long legs, a long neck and small head. It is born with grayish-brown down feathers for insulation; the feathers gradually turn pink with maturation in about 10 weeks.

Fun Facts

  • Chilean flamingos are pink a result of a diet high in beta carotene.
