Occasionally, a habitat, attraction or building may be temporarily unavailable to our guests due to construction, maintenance, animal health needs, special events or unforeseen circumstances. This page allows you to learn about which habitats, attractions and concessions are closed and how long they will be out of service. It also keeps you up to date on some exciting projects in progress. We apologize if any of your favorites are unavailable during your planned visit and hope that you will still join us for your dose of Vitamin Z!

Events
Sunset at the Zoo
The Detroit Zoological Society's annual Sunset at the Zoo fundraiser will feature a boardwalk-themed gala celebrating the Cotton Family Wetlands and soon-to-open Jane and Frank Warchol Beaver Habitat. The wildest event of the summer takes place Friday, June 14, 2013, 7-11:30 p.m. The 21-and-over party is held rain or shine, and the Zoo closes at 2 p.m. that day in preparation for the festivities.
Habitats
Wetlands and Beaver Habitat
The Cotton Family Wetlands – a Michigan ecosystem teeming with native fish, frogs, turtles and birds – features a Boardwalk that allows you to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature in a diverse and beautiful habitat. The Boardwalk opened last summer and traverses through the wetlands on the west side of the National Amphibian Conservation Center. Construction on the Jane and Frank Warchol Beaver Habitat is under way across from the Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat (backing up to the pond), and will include exciting underwater views of beavers. The project is slated for completion in June. During construction, visitor traffic is being diverted onto the new Boardwalk. Enjoy!
