Blue and Yellow Macaw

(Ara ararauna)

Blue-and-yellow macaws are known for their bright colors, long tails and wide wingspans. The Detroit Zoo is home to one member of this species — Tuki, a rescue who moved to the Zoo in 2025. She came from the pet trade and is estimated to have hatched in 2009.

Median life expectancy:They can live up to 50 years in both the wild and captivity, but the average lifespan is 30-35 years.

Diet:Blue and yellow macaws primarily eat seeds, nuts and fruits. At the Zoo, Tuki is provided with a specialized diet consisting of parrot pellets and a variety of fruits and vegetables. She receives seeds and nuts as treats for training or enrichment daily.
