Chilean flamingo

Phoenicopterus chilensis

At the Detroit Zoo
The Chilean flamingos can be found in the African Forest.

Chilean flamingos are large-bodied birds with long legs, long necks and small heads. They are born with grayish-brown down feathers for insulation; the feathers gradually turn pink with maturation in about 10 weeks.

Fun Facts

  • Chilean flamingos are pink as a result of a diet high in beta carotene.
