Enjoy lectures on a variety of topics each month with a Detroit Zoo Educator from the comfort of your own home!

Learn about the Great ape heart project and how zoos are working together to improve the heart health of apes in human care.

Who’s New at the Zoo: December 29th, 1:00 pm- We have had a very exciting year at the zoo in 2022! Spend some time learning about all our newest residents!

February 2nd at 1:00 pm Touch, Target and Tap! How does training behaviors through positive reinforcement contribute to excellent animal care and welfare?
March 2nd at 1:00 pm Do You See Me Now? We’ll dive into the various forms of camouflage and courtship displays used by animals throughout the animal kingdom
April 6th at 1:00 pm Sloths, Aardvarks, Bats, Oh My! Learn more about the Nocturnal Animals that live at the zoo and what they do when the guests go home
May 4th at 1:00 pm From the Sky to the Sea- How Penguins penguins first evolved from a common ancestor and perhaps lost their ability to fly
June 1st at 1:00 pm Crashes, Rafts and Prides – Discussions on the dynamics of animals groups and behaviors
July 6th at 1:00 pm Managing Endangered Species and Bringing them Back from Extinction. Ever wonder how species are managed in zoos? We’ll take an in-depth look at species survival plans and look at the innovative “Frozen Zoo” initiative as we attempt to save species from extinction
August 3rd at 1:00 pm Happy Birthday Detroit Zoo! This month the Detroit Zoo celebrates its 95th birthday! We will take a look back on the history of the zoo as well as what the future has in store!
September 7th at 1:00 pm Wolves to Man’s Best Friend… Learn how animals like gray wolves became domesticated overtime
October 5th at 1:00 pm Lessons in the Field- Peru Adopt-A-School and the Detroit Zoological Society’s partnership with CONAPAC  supporting education and conservation in the Peruvian Amazon
November 2nd at 1:00 pm Changing Adaptations for a Changing Climate- In the face of climate change what are species adapted to cold weather such as Polar Bears and Penguins doing to adjust to their changing ecosystems?
December 7th at 1:00 pm We have had a very exciting year at the zoo in 2023! Spend some time learning about all our newest residents

In-Person Tours

These tours will be an intimate experience for guests led by experienced docents. Each tour will focus on a small zoo area so guests can get in-depth knowledge of the features of the habitats and the animals who live there. Spots for this program need to be booked 2 weeks in advance.
