Ford Education Center Field Trips

Give your class a healthy dose of Vitamin Z!

Discover the Detroit Zoo, an extension of your classroom! The Ford Education Center is the heart of education opportunities that await you and your students. Our programs complement Michigan Grade Level and High School Content Expectations while addressing Next Generation Science Standards. Programs are offered year-round. Maximum group size is noted in the program descriptions.

All programs have a minimum of 15 students and require a $25 deposit. Programs are available at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, unless otherwise noted. For availability and/or booking, please call (248) 541-5717 ext. 3800.


Detroit Zoo - Education Programs

Animal Size

Audience: Kindergarten – Grade 1
Length of Program: 45 minutes
Cost: $50 per class, plus admission (maximum 35 students/7 chaperones)
State Correlations:  S.IP.00.14, S.IP.00.15, S.IP.00.16

How do you measure up?  Are you as tall as a tiger?  Do you have paws as big as a polar bear?  Students will use non-standard measurement to explore the amazing diversity of animal size.


Detroit Zoo - Education Programs

Alternative Dissection

Audience: Grade 6 – Grade 8
Length of Program: 90 minutes
Cost: $75 per class, plus admission (maximum 35 students/5 chaperones)
NGSS:  MS-LS1-3

Each year, millions of animals are dissected in schools. The Detroit Zoo offers a fun and interactive alternative. Come and experience animal “dissection” in a fun, hands-on way! Our Humane Science Lab is equipped with everything you need to participate in a full, alternative frog dissection without harming any animals.

Zoo Habitat Design

Audience: Grade 6 – Grade 8
Length of Program: 90 minutes
Cost: $75 per class, plus admission (maximum 35 students/5 chaperones)
NGSS: MS-ETS1-1, MS-ETS1-2, MS-ETS1-3, MS-ETS1-4

Come to the Zoo with your art, engineering and science skills ready! Students will explore the Arctic Ring of Life and use this habitat as a case study before designing their own zoo habitat.
