Summer Teacher Institute

Detroit Zoological Society education staff co-facilitate an annual, six-day workshop with internationally renowned inquiry-based learning expert Rebecca Dyasi. Ms. Dyasi shares her personal experiences from K-12 classrooms, colleges and universities, and from serving as a science education advisor to school districts, science centers, zoos and science museums, as she engages participants in a dynamic series of activities and experiences.

Ms. Dyasi shares her personal experiences from K-12 classrooms, colleges and universities, and from serving as a science education advisor to school districts, science centers, zoos and science museums, as she engages participants in a dynamic series of activities and experiences.

Participants will:

  • Participate in hands-on and inquiry-based learning activities at the Detroit Zoo.
  • Practice using phenomena to engage and excite students.
  • Understand and address common student misconceptions.
  • Create lessons to take back to the classroom for immediate implementation.
  • Be a part of a continuing network of support through virtual and in-person meet-ups at the Zoo throughout the school year.
  • Participate with a colleague from their school to provide a daily support network for each other.
  • Discover how to use the Zoo as an extension of the classroom, bringing learning to life.
  • Earn SCECHs.

Schedule of workshops:

  • July TBD – Engage and Inspire: Teachers will participate in activities and hands-on experiences
  • August TBD – Apply and Create: Supported by DZS staff and Ms. Dyasi, teachers will apply what they’ve experienced by creating lessons for their classrooms.

Join us on Saturday, October 12, 2019, to explore resources, programs and experiences the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) has to offer you and your students.

The DZS education staff will be at various locations around the Zoo to share programs, activities and resources available for teachers and students, from pre-K to high school, and teacher professional development opportunities.

All educators need to pre-register for the event and bring a valid teacher/educator ID with them for free admission and parking. Non-educator guests are welcome to attend by purchasing an admission ticket or using a valid DZS membership.
