Things are looking green this spring at the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS).
From April to June, the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center (BINC) will host not one, but four celebrations to honor the earth, promote sustainable living and encourage guests to make their community a greener place.
Hosted in partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and other AZA-accredited zoos, Party for the Planet aims to connect families to nature through activities and volunteer opportunities that improve the planet. With more than 120 participating zoos and aquariums, Party for the Planet is poised to be the largest combined Earth Day celebration in North America.

Do I need purchase tickets to Party for the Planet?
All Party for the Planet events at the Detroit Zoo are included with your Zoo admission purchase and are free to members. The Green Day celebration at the Belle Isle Nature Center is free and open to the general public.
The Party for the Planet Event Series includes the following four events:
World Oceans Day at the Detroit Zoo
June 8 | 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event series will conclude with World Oceans Day. Celebrate the waters that cover 71 percent of our planet as the DZS highlights ocean and water conservation and encourages you to keep waterways clean and connect with nature.

- Specialized “ed-zoo-cation” stations
- Talks with animal care and education staff
- Resources to allow you and your family to continue caring for the planet at home
All guests visiting the Detroit Zoo who are not DZS members are required to purchase tickets in advance.
Virtual Earth Day Celebration

The DZS is launching its Party for the Planet series on Earth Day, which historically focuses on education surrounding environmental issues and sustainability.
Tune into Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center social media channels for a day of virtual learning. DZS education staff will be posting throughout the day about what you can do to take care of the earth and local wildlife.

Green Day at the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center

With so much excitement surrounding environmental education, the DZS split its in-person Green Day celebration across multiple campuses. There will be events taking place at both the Detroit Zoo and the Belle Isle Nature Center. Join us at either location for a day full of hands-on education about how to take care of our planet!
What to expect at the Detroit Zoo:
- Specialized “ed-zoo-cation” stations
- Talks with animal care and education staff
- The opportunity to participate in a citizen BioBlitz to identify local plant and animal species
- Earth-friendly crafts
- Resources to allow you and your family to continue caring for the planet at home
What to expect at the Belle Isle Nature Center:
- A 100 percent free, outdoor day of fun
- Nature hikes
- Talks with conservation specialists
- Opportunities to participate in citizen science initiatives
- Earth-friendly crafts
- Resources to allow you and your family to continue caring for the planet at home
All guests visiting the Detroit Zoo who are not DZS members are required to purchase tickets in advance.

Endangered Species Day at the Detroit Zoo

Party for the Planet will continue at the Detroit Zoo even after Earth Month ends! For Endangered Species Day, Detroit Zoo staff have put together a day full of education to engage the public as the DZS and AZA work to save animals from extinction. Learn what you can do to help save your favorite animals, from cleaning the environment to building sustainable habitats.
