Wild Summer Nights concert series
The Detroit Zoo gets even wilder on Wednesday nights during July and August with our annual Wild Summer Nights concert series. Grab a blanket, pack a picnic and relax while enjoying a variety of live music from local bands. Genres vary in style each week, offering melodies of children’s, country, folk, classic rock, jazz and Motown. You can also explore the Zoo to see what your favorite animals are up to after hours. Yard games are available for play and dancing is always encouraged!
Cooler checks will be conducted. There is no outside beer, wine, alcohol or glass allowed on property. Food, snacks, beer, wine and soft drinks are available for purchase from Zoo concessions.
The concerts take place in the Main Picnic Grove and are free with Zoo admission. The Zoo remains open until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays during the concert series.

July 3 – Bernadette Kathryn and the Lonely Days Band (country)

July 17 – Cosmic Groove (pop)

July 24 – Michigan Opera Theatre (opera)
Originating in 1963, the Michigan Opera Theatre (MOT) is the premiere opera company within the state of Michigan. Based out of Detroit, the MOT often holds their show-stopping performances at the Detroit Opera House. Every year, the MOT is known for presenting both a dance and an opera season, as well as musical theatre performances. July 31 – Cupcakeasaurus (children’s)
By day, Mr. Seley is a third- and fourth-grade teacher in Birmingham, but by night he is the lead singer of the children’s band Cupcakeasaurus. Spending his free time writing, recording and performing music for kids all across the country, Mr. Seley combines both humorous and educational topics in his songs along with an upbeat and fun nature. August 7 – The Sun Messengers (jazz/Motown)
Detroit’s number one dance band is coming to the Zoo! Originating in 1980, the Sun Messengers have really made a name for themselves over the years. With notable performances for the Detroit Pistons, Martha Reeves and The Drifters and even Jay Leno, the Sun Messengers have become one of the most sought-after groups in all of Detroit. They are known for their Jazz and Motown roots, but often mix in contemporary pop songs that will definitely get the crowd on their feet! August 14 – Olivia Millerschin (vintage folk)
Singer/songwriter Olivia Millerschin has taken the world by storm with her sensational voice and unique blend of folk and pop music. Having appeared on America’s Got Talent as a quarter-finalist and as the winner of the Great American Song Contest, Millerschin has gained a large following in both the Detroit area and around the country. She has performed in hundreds of different shows over the past few years, touring internationally with big-name artists such as Howie Day, Tyler Hilton, and Ryan Cabrera and Orla Gartland. August 21 – Rhythm Society Orchestra (big band)
Comprised of 15 members, The Rhythm Society Orchestra is a staple dance band that plays all throughout the Midwest. They are especially known for their modern take on vintage swing music and have been featured in a multitude of dance workshops and swing dance events taught by world-class instructors. With influences of Mel Torme, Joe Williams, and Frank Sinatra in their songs, you’ll feel as though you have time-traveled back to the Swing Era in the ‘30s and ‘40s! August 28 – The Blackjack Band (classic rock)
Known for their electrifying covers of classic hits, The Blackjack Band has become Metro Detroit’s classic rock giant since their start in the 1970s. Focusing solely on the eras that inspired great rock, The Blackjack Band plays covers of hit songs from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. Their high energy performance is one all crowds will love.
