Educator Open House
Calling all educators! The Detroit Zoo welcomes all educators to visit the Zoo and explore the resources available to help bring classroom learning to life. Our annual educator open house is held each September. Admission is free for educators with current teaching credentials, pre-service teachers with student IDs, administrators and out-of-school-time educators. Family and friends may purchase discounted admission to join in on the fun.
Summer Teacher Institute
Elementary teachers are invited to a four-day workshop to enhance their existing science curriculum. Hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences will address Next Generation Science Standards and move students from knowing to understanding.
Applications for the 2025 Summer Teacher Institute are now closed. Information for summer professional development opportunities will be available in spring 2026.
Humane Education Workshops
The world becomes what we teach! Humane education is an approach to education that prepares students to take action to help people, animals, and the environment. On a regular basis, the DZS Berman Academy for Humane Education hosts humane education workshops by the Institute for Humane Education, Humane Education Advocates Reaching Teachers, and other experts in the field. Want to implement Participatory Science in your classroom?
Our hybrid, multiple workshop course will support teachers who would like to increase their effectiveness at teaching authentic science in their classrooms. Participatory Science projects that are simple to implement and engaging for all learners will be highlighted with ongoing support to implement them with students.
