ROYAL OAK, Mich.,

In recognition of its commitment to diversity and community engagement, the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) has been honored with a 2021 Diversity Champion award from Corp! Magazine.

Corp! Magazine recognizes businesses, organizations and leaders who champion diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives within their communities.

The selection honors the DZS for its work to address transportation challenges and improve accessibility for Detroit Zoo employees and guests.

The DZS partnered with the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) for “Zoom to the Zoo” which allows those who participate to save money by avoiding parking fees and receiving a free return bus ride while reducing their carbon footprint.

Dr. De’Andrea Matthews is director of diversity and community engagement for the DZS. Dr. Matthews works closely with the DZS executive team, racial equity working group, diversity advisory committee and human resources department as well as the board’s diversity and community engagement committee.

“The Detroit Zoological Society’s journey towards being a diverse, inclusive, equitable and accessible organization began long before my arrival. I am extremely pleased that we have been recognized with this honor from Corp! Magazine,” said Dr. Matthews.
