New since 2022!

  1. We’ve simplified our membership categories to four options: individual, individual plus, family and supporter.
  2. We’re offering new flexible requirements to better serve your needs. For example, named members are no longer required to reside at the same address.
  3. We’re now offering a new add-on option. Primary members can add an additional child guest who can accompany them on each visit with the new unnamed child add-on.
  4. We’ve added new member benefits providing more value to your annual membership:
    • Early-bird pricing on tickets to select public events
    • Zoo experience discounts on favorites such as mingles and dining adventures
    • Exclusive invitations to member appreciation nights and member-only events



Habitat has gone digital!

The Detroit Zoological Society is committed to being a leader in sustainability. Your one-year subscription to Habitat, the Detroit Zoological Society’s quarterly magazine has gone digital. The implementation of a digital publication creates a more eco-friendly membership process and uses less paper materials.

Detroit Zoological Society Digital Membership Card FAQs

As of March 1, 2021, the Detroit Zoological Society provides digital membership cards as a benefit of your membership! If you are currently using a plastic card, please read on as we cover some frequently asked questions.

When will I receive my digital card?

You will be sent your digital card within 24 hours when you renew or buy a new Detroit Zoo membership. Look for an email from the Detroit Zoological Society with instructions. Your physical card will remain valid until the expiration date listed on the card.

How do I access my digital card?

Digital membership cards will be sent to the primary email address of every active member. Open the email on your mobile device and follow the instructions to download the card to your smartphone wallet. Android users may need to install Wallet Passes from the Play Store prior to download. If you do not receive an email or accidentally delete the email, please contact us at or (248) 541-5717 for a new email with the link.

How do I download my digital membership card to my iPhone or Android phone?

Where can I find my digital card?

Once downloaded, your digital cards will live in your smartphone’s wallet.

Now that I have my digital membership card, how do I use it?

Digital cards function just like plastic membership cards. Your digital membership card is unique to your membership and displays your name, membership level, expiration date and benefits. Show your digital membership card and photo ID verification at the Zoo’s main entrance and at the Zoofari Market to take advantage of your member discount!

My membership includes reciprocal Zoo benefits. How can I use my reciprocal benefits without a plastic card?

Your digital card will list all the reciprocal benefits associated with your membership level. Additionally, we have contacted all partnering institutions to inform them of our new digital card system. Simply show your digital membership card and photo ID at participating zoos and aquariums to receive free or reduced admission. Please see the Reciprocal List of Zoos.

Will my digital card update when I renew my membership?

Yes! After your membership has been processed, your digital card will automatically update with your new expiration date, as well as any name changes you requested. Please allow up to two weeks for processing. You only have to download the card once.

When will you send me new digital cards?

If you upgrade or downgrade your membership, or upon request.

What if I prefer a plastic membership card?

By default, all new and renewing members will now receive a digital membership card sent to the email address you provide.  Please contact us at or (248) 541-5717 for more information.

What if I lose/delete my membership card or it has not arrived yet?

If you need a replacement card, please contact us at or (248) 541-5717. You can also show your photo ID and a Detroit Zoo staff member can look up your membership if you lose/delete your card.

Can someone else use my membership card?

No, membership benefits are nontransferable.

I bought a gift membership. Will the recipient get a digital card?

Yes, once their gift certificate is redeemed, we will send the digital membership to the email provided by the gift recipient.

    STEP 1
    Open the email you received about your digital card on your iPhone.

    STEP 2
    Look for the button that says “Download Membership Card”. Tap this button and a page in your browser will open with an “Add to Wallet” button. Tap this button and then tap “Add” at the top right corner of your screen to save the card to your app.

    STEP 3
    You can now close the page, by tapping “Done” in the top left corner.

    STEP 4
    To use your card, return to your home screen. Then open the Wallet app, which is pre-installed on all iOS devices. If you cannot find the Wallet App, swipe left until you see a search bar on your screen. Type “Wallet” into the search bar and click the wallet icon that appears under applications. Your membership card should appear in the wallet’s contents. If your digital membership card isn’t the first thing you see when you open your Wallet app, swipe right or left to scroll until you see your membership card.


    You will either need to forward the email to the second cardholder or download the card onto your device and then share it.

    To share a digital card you have already downloaded, follow these steps:

    STEP 1
    Tap the button located either at the top right or bottom right of the card you want to share.

    STEP 2
    Look for the “Share Pass” option. Click ‘Share Pass’ send the card via text message or email to the secondary cardholder.

    STEP 3
    Once the message has been received, the second cardholder will need to open the attachment of the digital card.

    STEP 4
    Once the attachment has been opened, tap “Add” to save the card on their device.
