Teen Volunteer Opportunities

The Detroit Zoological Society welcomes youth to participate in one or both of our Volunteen programs.

Zoo Corps Volunteen Program

The Detroit Zoological Society is looking for energetic youth ages 14-17 to be part of our Zoo Corps. This is an opportunity to earn community service hours while working with a team from the Education Department to provide hands-on learning opportunities to guests at the Detroit Zoo. Benefits include leadership experience, customer service training, learning and practicing communication skills all in a professional work setting. Opportunities to volunteer stretch throughout the year, including weekdays, evenings and weekends.


  • Complete an application (accepted year-round)
  • Applicant and parent/guardian complete a phone interview
  • Attend one 8-hour Volunteen Orientation with parent/guardian
  • Complete a minimum of 30 hours of service per year

Counselor-in-Training Volunteen Program

Our Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program pairs teen volunteers ages 16 and 17 with paid camp staff to assist with Detroit Zoo Safari Camp. Responsibilities include assisting with groups of 10-12 youth (grades K-8) on hikes through the Zoo, aiding with craft projects and interacting with staff and guests. Camp is held mainly outdoors Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Applicants must be able to commit to two full weeks between June 29 and August 21, 2020. The two weeks do not need to be consecutive.


  • Complete an application by June 5, 2020
  • Applicant and parent/guardian complete a phone interview
  • Attend 8-hour Volunteen Orientation with parent/guardian prior to June 25
  • Attend the mandatory 4-hour CIT training on Thursday, June 25, 2020
  • Complete a minimum of 80 service hours (two full weeks of camp)

  • Sunday, June 14
  • Friday, July 10
  • Saturday, October 3
