Blue-Throated Macaw

(Ara glaucogularis)

Blue-throated macaws are native to a small area of Bolivia. Considered critically endangered, fewer than 350 individuals are estimated to remain in the wild, as blue-throated macaw populations have been depleted by factors such as nesting competition, predation, hunting and capture for the pet trade.

The Detroit Zoo is home to one blue-throated macaw — Momma, who started her life with a private owner and later moved to a bird sanctuary. She came to the Detroit Zoo in 2026 and shares a habitat with Tuki, a blue-and-yellow macaw.
