Make a difference

Environmental enrichment is one component of our comprehensive animal welfare program at the Detroit Zoological Society. The animal care team researches each group’s natural history and develops a plan to promote behavioral goals that are important to the species and to each individual. The enrichment program promotes positive well-being by allowing individuals to complete species-specific behaviors, increasing investigation and active behaviors, and creating a more complete activity budget. To achieve these goals, animal care teams use a variety of items and events, some of which are listed below.
