The Detroit Zoological Society has been working to preserve the Puerto Rican crested toad since 1995 through a cooperative breeding program. Thousands of tadpoles have been released in protected refuges in Puerto Rico. At the Zoo, this nocturnal toad can be difficult to spot because they can almost completely flatten their body to fit into tiny crevices in their habitat.
