On select Wednesdays from now through September 2025, artist Nick Bair transforms the Zoo’s walkways into walk-stoppers with hand-drawn chalk art inspired by the animals who call the Detroit Zoo home. One minute it’s a slab of pavement, the next it’s a sea otter mid-swim or a giraffe stretching toward the treetops. You’ll have to see it to believe it.
Nick’s chalk drawings are vibrant, full of life and totally temporary. So when you spot him working, stop by and say “hi” — and snap a photo before it’s gone!
Time: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Place: The pathway in front of the camels
All dates are weather-dependent, because chalk and rain don’t mix.
Nick Bair is an artist, animal lover and all-around bright spot in our summer lineup. He’s also autistic and passionate about making art that brings people together. Nick works live on Zoo grounds, chatting with curious guests and building each drawing from scratch.

This series is made possible through our partnership with the Living and Learning Enrichment Center, a Northville-based nonprofit that empowers teens and adults with disabilities through community-based experiences (like this one).
Together, we’re creating space for connection, creativity and lots of colorful sidewalk selfies.
