Safari Slumbers

All groups sleep in the second-floor classrooms of the Ford Education Center. The floors are hard ground (industrial carpet or wood), so please pack sleeping bags. You may bring a twin-sized air mattress or sleeping mat, but cots are not permitted on the premises. Dim emergency safety lighting remains on all night, so we recommend bringing a sleep mask for comfort.

While the program is designed as a complete overnight journey, we certainly understand that emergencies or urgent family matters may arise. If you or a member of your group knows in advance they cannot stay the full night, we recommend exploring our daytime or evening Nocturnal Adventures instead to ensure everyone has the best possible experience.

You will carry your own gear from the 10 Mile Road parking lot to the Ford Education Center. Because there is a fair amount of walking involved, please pack lightly. Backpacks work best to keep your hands free for sleeping bags. You may also bring a wagon to help haul your group's supplies. 

Overnights run rain or shine. Every season offers a unique perspective on wildlife activity, and the Zoo features numerous indoor habitat buildings to keep your group protected during inclement weather. Programs are only canceled if the weather is deemed hazardous and the Zoo closes entirely. 

Adult chaperones are entirely responsible for managing, carrying and administering all medications for their group members. Detroit Zoo overnight guides are legally prohibited from dispensing or carrying any medications, including basic pain relievers. Please detail all medical conditions, allergies or physical needs on your mandatory participant forms prior to arrival. 

Every attendee — both children and adults — must complete and turn in three physical documents at the check-in gate: the Overnight Contact Form, the Release of Responsibility Form, and the Photography and Video Release Consent Form.
