HAZWOPER Training Workshop

Detroit Zoo - HAZWOPER Training
Detroit Zoo - HAZWOPER Training

October 25 and 26, 2016 • Cost: $380

The Association of Zoos & Aquariums is continuing to develop a plan to better position itself and its members in responding to oil spills…especially as they relate to wildlife.   Oil spill response training sessions (provided by the Alaska SeaLife Center and assisted by key staff from the Oiled Wildlife Care Network) have been conducted at the AZA Annual Conference in September 2014, at the AZA Mid-Year Meeting in March 2015 and most recently, at Moody Gardens in October 2015. A total of 75 AZA institutional professionals have been credentialed through these three sessions.

Our goal is to create regional emergency response hubs across the country.

The Detroit Zoological Society is now offering a two-day workshop October 25-26, 2016 for the 24-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Training. The workshop is designed to train and certify zoo and aquarium professionals to respond to oil spills and other environmental disasters that affect wildlife in all regions of the U.S. and possibly beyond. This network of HAZWOPER-trained employees will work to maximize the number of animals – especially threatened and endangered species – that are rescued, rehabilitated and released. The Detroit Zoo offering is unique in that some of the training focus will be on terrestrial spills through pipelines and railroads.

The workshop is comprised of lectures, discussions and an environmental disaster drill in the Detroit Zoo. Registration includes all lunches, snacks for both days and dinner the first night.
