  • Polk Penguin Conservation Center

    PCC-head-final2

The Polk Penguin Conservation Center has been in the planning and design phase for two years and represents the largest project the Detroit Zoo has ever undertaken. One of the most dramatic features is a chilled 326,000-gallon, 25-foot-deep aquatic area that will allow visitors to watch as penguins explore their habitat and deep-dive – something that is otherwise impossible to see, even in the wild. Two acrylic underwater tunnels will provide guests with views above and below water as the birds dive and soar.

Support from the community at all levels is needed to create this amazing home for penguins that is centered on conservation and will be an extraordinary experience for our guests.

Be part of the transformation by making a gift to support the Polk Penguin Conservation Center.

Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary Antarctic expeditions and epic crossings of the Drake Passage, the facility will feature 4-D effects such as polar blasts, rough waves and snow, and physical elements such as ice crevasses. The building’s exterior will evoke a tabular iceberg. The habitats will ensure an optimal environment for the penguins’ welfare and encourage wild behavior, from diving and porpoising to nesting and rearing young.

Conceptual renderings of the Polk Penguin Conservation Center by architectural firm Albert Kahn Associates, Inc, architects of the Ruth Roby Glancy Animal Health Complex. It will be built on a 2-acre site near the Detroit Zoo’s entrance and will open in early 2016.

Special recognition opportunities are available for larger investments. Please contact Tricia Brosnahan at (248) 336-5728 to learn more.

    Make A Donation

The Adopt-A-School program provides educational materials and supplies for the schools in rural Amazonia through donations from individuals, schools and organizations in the United States and around the world. Since 1999, the Detroit Zoological Society has partnered with Conservacion de la Naturaleza Amazonica del Peru (CONAPAC) in this conservation and educational program.

One hundred percent of all donations made to the Adopt-A-School program are used by CONAPAC to purchase school supplies in Iquitos, Peru, thus supporting the local economy, reducing purchasing costs and eliminating shipping costs. Donations are also used to fund workshops that help teachers and community leaders promote sustainable lifestyles to protect the natural resources of the Amazon rainforest.

    FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

  • Wish List

    enrichment

Enrichment is an essential element of the daily care of our animals at the Detroit Zoo. The goal of the enrichment program is to assist our animals in demonstrating their natural behavior, allow them exercise and add variety to their day. Enrichment encourages the animals to engage in species-typical behaviors and gives them more choice and control over their environment while enhancing their well-being.

In order to achieve this, animal staff provides a list of goods and/or services needed. This list does change often.

If you are interested in donating to the Enrichment Wish List, please contact us at (248) 336-5836, or [email protected]

  • Planned Giving

Consider including the Detroit Zoological Society in your estate plans

A gift to the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) that is part of a thoughtful, comprehensive estate plan provides a way to complete a lifetime of giving or to make a significant gift that was not possible during your lifetime. In many cases, planned giving provides helpful financial benefits to the donor through tax breaks.  Your gift will provide a legacy for future generations by protecting and conserving some of the most remarkable creatures on earth.

Throughout our history, the Detroit Zoo has welcomed generations of visitors with experiences that stimulate learning and encourage a deeper appreciation for the awe-inspiring creatures that share our planet. A planned gift will allow us to continue a tradition of leadership in metro Detroit’s cultural, educational and recreational community, as well as the zoological community.

Planned gifts may include bequests, living trusts, charitable gift annuities, charitable life income trusts, retirement plans, life insurance, gifts of securities or real estate.  The DZS encourages you to consult with your attorney, accountant or other professional advisor to confirm the financial benefits of a planned gift and determine how it best fits with your personal financial circumstances.

    Wildlife Legacy Circle

wildlife_legacyThe Detroit Zoological Society’s Wildlife Legacy Circle was created to recognize friends who have endorsed our mission by including the Society in their estate plans or by making a planned gift.

Undesignated contributions from members of the Wildlife Legacy Circle are directed to the Endowment Fund for the Detroit Zoological Society. This general endowment provides annual income to maintain and improve our animal habitats, grounds, facilities and infrastructure, thus sustaining unparalleled experiences for our visitors and the highest quality of care for our magnificent animals.

As an alternative, donors may designate their gift for a specific aspect of our mission. We encourage individuals who are considering making restricted contributions for a particular endowment or any other special purpose to discuss these ideas with us before finalizing their plans.

We will assist you in finding giving options that best suit your situation, and will simplify the process by working with you and your advisors. To learn more about supporting the Detroit Zoological Society through a planned gift, please contact Tricia Brosnahan at (248) 336-5728, or or email us.

  • Matching Gifts

The process is as simple as completing a standard matching gift form from your employer and mailing it to the Zoo along with your gift.

Contact your Human Resources Department directly to find out if your employer has a matching gifts program. The proceeds from the match will be placed toward the same program as the original gift.

For more information or questions, please call (248) 336-5729, or email [email protected].
