McCord’s box turtle

At the Detroit Zoo
The McCord’s box turtle can be found inside the Holden Reptile Conservation Center, located near the middle of the Detroit Zoo.  There, visitors can learn about the 80 different species (and approximately 240 individuals) of reptiles at the Zoo, one-fifth of which are considered threatened or endangered in the wild.


This turtle has yellow skin with brown and black stripes along its head with a brownish shell. It is able to completely protect itself by bringing in its head and limbs.


Fun Facts

  • It was first discovered in a Chinese market in 1988 being sold as food.
